What is a fractal?

Fractal cuts are based on fractals, a fractal is a shape which is repeated many times within an object at different magnifications.  They also have the property of self similarity that if you magnify a portion of the fractal it will look like the whole of the fractal.  To find out more about fractals click here

Making the Fractal Cut pop-up card

Use this image and enlarge it in a word document to fill the page or view the PDF file.  The horizontal lines you score and fold the vertical lines you cut.

Instructions

Fold the paper in half so that the lines are on the outside.  Cut vertically upwards on the lines furthest out from the centre. Fold the middle flap upwards both ways and then push it up and reverse fold the centre fold this makes generation 1.

Genearation 1

Cut vertically upwards on the next most outward line on the  diagram.   Fold these flaps both ways and then push them up and reverse fold the flaps.
